Perks of Being a Consultant: The Freedom to Work Anywhere

By Ken Chen

I fully admit that I drink from the "cup half full" when it comes to the freelance consulting lifestyle. It's the lane I've chosen for the last 15 years and the one I've tried to inspire for others for the last 10.

One perk of being a consultant is having the ability to work anywhere. Projects that are structured the right way allow you to control how you work, including where and when. Of course, there is the reality of working collaboratively with a client. But with careful planning and good communication, anything is possible.

This summer, I worked from the beach for a week in Santa Cruz. Other EM team members worked remotely from Boston, Cape Cod, Denver, Seattle, and Vancouver.

Inspiration In Real Life

Need inspiration or tips? Here are a few examples of EM Marketing community members that are living their dreams! We'll share more about their stories in future blog posts.

  • Christine Keefer is a marketing consultant whom we met three years ago working for the same client. She's an ABM expert and our account lead at Adobe. Married with two teenage boys, her family wanted to escape the stress and craziness of the Bay Area. So last year, they moved to Bend, Oregon.
  • Justin Liszanckie runs EM Marketing's Design and Development practice, in addition to working on client projects. I was introduced to Justin by Zoe Catsiff who was doing social media work for EM back in 2010. You can read all about how consulting allows him to travel often. He says exploring the world gives him the energy he needs to do successful work. Here are his tips on how to successfully work remotely.
  • Erica Lee is a messaging, marketing, and PR strategist who grew up and worked in SF for the first 40+ years of her life. I met Erica ~10 years ago when she was volunteering at the same YMCA as my wife. Strategiclee is her PR firm and still is. Two years ago, she decided to join her now-husband Charles in their dream to move to a farm and carve a more natural, healthy lifestyle in Grants Pass, Oregon.
  • Ed Sweet is a content writer and copywriter whom we met early last year through another consultant. He lives in Phoenix, Arizona. I wondered if we'd be able to find Ed much work, but one year and six clients later, he's one of our go-to writers. See how he makes the most of his day.

You Can Live the Dream, Too

If you've dreamed about living in another area or just visiting for an extended period of time, it's possible. All it requires is some imagination, the right client, and the will to go for it. Oh, and it never hurts to have the right community/partner (like EM) to help along the way.
