Facebook Stuff You Already Knew: Mobile Will Be More Important Than the Web Next Year

I was at Facebook recently, at their new-ish and very large campus. They shared some best practices and interesting stats. Here are some things I learned:
- Mobile will be more important than the web somewhere between late 2013 and early 2014 for Facebook. That’s when more traffic will be coming from mobile devices than PCs. Both lines are moving up, but the mobile line is steeper.
- Facebook dominates all mobile activity. Twenty-two percent of all mobile activity comes from people using Facebook. That’s not a typo! One out of four to five of all mobile activity is driven by Facebook.
- Most Facebook users use their mobile app. That’s fifty-seven percent or 543 million of Facebook’s 955 million user base.
One other random figure: on average, 16% of your fan base will see each post you make. Of course, this reach multiplies with more likes, comments and shares you earn.
These stats lead Facebook to believe that in order to increase visibility for the Facebook Company/Brand page you’re managing, you should:
- Keep your posts short (they suggest less than 90 characters — holy shorter than Twitter!)
- Upload pretty images, and
- Use engaging content (think polls, questions, and clever language)
Do you have any other suggestions?
