A Pivot in the Employment World
There’s a secret war going on between corporations who want more from their employees and workers who want a fair wage and work-life balance. For decades, corporations have won by a large margin. Don’t like your boss or what you’re working on? Well too bad, you just have to go back to that soul-sucking J-O-B. Fortunately, that’s changing.
I’m a staunch believer that the Future of Work is coming quickly. It’s one that I believe will create a third classification for workers — somewhere in between employee and contractor. If you are Uber, you’re banking on it.
Employment Trends of Today
A few trends are forcing long-time employment traditions to change, including the rise of the Millennials, technology in the workplace, the explosion of the sharing economy and the insatiable appetite for corporations to grow and push their workers to produce more.
More than one third of U.S. workers are now freelancers, and that’s growing rapidly. For the rest that are still full-time employees, more and more will start to see that being a contractor (or perhaps something in-between) is best for their families and their lives. They will switch over. And when they do, they will help make this pivot in the employment world.
