EQ, Meet AI: Why Authenticity Is Winning the Hiring Game Right Now
These days, employers expect job seekers to use AI to apply more quickly. But according to a recent Washington Post article, that speed is coming at a cost. Candidates are leaning on AI so heavily that their applications are filled with unnatural phrasing and inflated experience claims. One company asked candidates: “What is your most controversial personal conviction about the workplace?” They received over 300 “eerily similar” responses with the same structure and talking points. The use of AI was obvious, and so was the lack of effort.
Do marketing hiring managers want to hire those candidates? Or would they prefer someone who expresses their own ideas and personalities and takes the time to thoughtfully submit their applications?
A Noisy Hiring Ecosystem
Hiring has become “stuck in an AI doom loop.” Candidates use AI to stand out, while hiring managers turn to AI to filter resumes and experience, making it easier to miss nuances and identify genuine talent.
According to The Hiring Trends Report 2026 by recruitment technology firm Willo, employers are recognizing that the process needs to be human-led. They’re using techniques to probe more deeply, including adding skills-based assessments, increasing use of video submissions, and implementing early AI-detection tools. The consensus is clear – relationship building, negotiations, and final decisions cannot be automated.
For marketing roles especially, communication, creativity, and cultural fit are non-negotiable. Recruiters need to assess the person behind the resume. Do they have clarity of thought? Are they genuinely motivated to fulfill the role? Is their personality and work ethic a match for the team they’ll be working with?
What This Means for Marketing Hiring
Marketing candidates who let AI do the heavy lifting risk blending into the noise, particularly at the senior and specialist levels where differentiation matters most. EM’s approach cuts through this problem by design. We have real conversations with a curated, vetted community of marketers to understand who is the right fit, not just on paper, but in practice.
On the client side, our Account Leads work closely with the hiring managers to understand the role, team dynamics, and company goals. As marketers themselves, they often bring perspective on what type of placement might be most impactful, not just who’s available.
EM was built for exactly this moment: relationship-first, marketing-fluent, and focused on fit over volume. Ready to cut through the noise? Let’s talk.
