Practical AI Tips for Marketers: Start with the Problem (Part 1)
As a marketing leader, you may be asking, “Where do we actually start with AI?” Our current cohort of Next Gen Marketers had a wonderful opportunity to interview and learn from a group of EM Community Members who are actively using AI in their daily workflows.
We were curious to find out – what are the most practical, specific, and underutilized tips they’ve discovered so far? In this first installment, let’s see what five marketing experts shared about the mindset they have about AI.

Jolie Shapiro | Founder & Host, Revenue Mind
Tell AI to retrieve, not generate.
“Flip it. Don’t tell it to generate, tell it to retrieve. Retrieve your actual source, your research, your transcript, your data, and say, ‘Only use what’s in here.’ You go from confident nonsense to something you can actually put your name on. The skill isn’t about getting AI to write more. It’s getting it to hallucinate less.”
Never ship AI in someone else’s voice without making it true.
“AI can give you a draft, it can’t give you a voice. It typically gets you 70 to 75% of the way, but that last 30%, the part that actually sounds human, is still your job. Never ship AI in someone’s voice without making it true.”

Josef Robey | Founder, Storytelling Tech
Start with the bottleneck in your workflow, not the tool.
“Start with the bottleneck in your workflow… Here’s where we want to get smarter around what we’re trying to achieve, and how can AI help us achieve that? And then you can actually work with AI and do a brainstorm of how to solve this. What tools can I start experimenting with?”

Molly St. Louis | Creative Strategist, Marketer, Award-Winning Multimedia Producer
Have AI challenge your thinking, not validate it.
“You don’t want your AI to be a cheerleader for you. Have it challenge your thinking. Ask it to poke holes in your idea. What am I missing? Where are the gaps? My AI is very ruthless to me. I’ve trained it to be. And I like it.”

Delyn Simons | Product Marketing Consultant
Think agent-assisted, not agent-led.
“Don’t get intimidated by terms being thrown around right now like agent-led marketing. Start thinking about agent-assisted marketing. Agents can be members of your own team and it can make individual contributors so much more productive if you have the right technology stack to make use of the agents. You’re the senior strategist. You’re the one telling them what to do. They’re sitting alongside you and learning as you’re coding. The more that you give them to do, the smarter they get.”

Ravali Dodia | Director, Integrated Marketing Campaigns, ServiceNow
AI does not equal Google search.
“Don’t use AI as a search engine. Use it as a thinking partner. The intricate problems, the ‘how do I think like a marketer’ questions, the things you’re really trying to solve and build. That’s where it’s so much smarter.”
